There is something very mysterious and exciting about islands. And more so about artificial islands around the world. Owing to the advancement in technology, it is now possible to build our own man-made islands. Here we bring you 17 Top Artificial Islands Of The World.
1. The World Islands
The World Islands is one of the top artificial islands consisting of various smaller islands and is located in the Persian Gulf 4 kms off the coast of Dubai. It is mainly formed by sand dredged from the shallow coastal waters od Dubai. Its construction began in 2013 and it was originally conceived by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
2. Île aux Cygnes
The Île aux Cygnes in France is one of the top artificial islands on the river Seine. It was created in 1827 originally to protect the port of Grenelle. It is 850 metres long and 11 metres wide at its widest point. It houses a quarter scale replica of the Statue of Liberty which is 22 metres long and faces west towards the Statue of Liberty located in New York City.
3. Palm Islands
Palm Islands is also one of the top artificial islands and it consists of three islands namely Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Deira Island, on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Only Palm Jumeirah is completed and it was built using sand and rocks entirely. It is also home to the luxury resort Palm Atlantis Hotel.
Peberholm located in Danish part of the Øresund strait is one of the top artificial islands. It was named so to complement Saltholm, its neighbouring natural island. As of 2007, it is home to 454 species of plants and as of 2005, it houses 12 species of birds and 20 species of spiders. According to scientists, the island is a biological experiment.
5. Amwaj Islands
Amwaj Islands are one of the top artificial islands located in the Persian Gulf near the coast of Muharraq Island. It covers roughly 4.31 km² of area. Amwaj introduced lots of new technologies to that region such as geo tubes, fibre optic “Smart City” technology, vacuum sewerage and others. The island contains commercial, residential and retail buildings as well.
6. The Islands of Uros
The Man-made Islands of Uros located in Lake Titicaca Puno, Peru and inhabited by the Uros or Uru people is one of the top man-made islands. It is a group of three floating islands namely Uru-Chipayas, Uru-Muratos and the Uru-Iruitos. The islands were constructed using dried bundles of totora reeds.
7. The THUMS Island
The THUMS Islands in San Pedro Bay is one of the top artificial islands. It is a set of four man-made islands built in 1965 originally to tap into the East Wilmington Oil Field. The four man-made islands are namely Island Grissom, Island White, Island Chaffee and Island Freeman.
8. Kamfers Dam Island
There is an artificial “S” shaped island located behind Kamfers Dam in South Africa. It was constructed in 2006 and since then up to 50000 flamingos flock to the dam thus making it to the list of top artificial islands of the world. 26000 tonnes of material was moved to create the island with the help of a local company Ekapa Mining.
9. Spiral Island
Spiral Island is one of the top artificial islands of the world. It is a floating man-made island in Mexico by Richart “Reishee” Sowa. A replacement of this, Joyxee Islands has been constructed and opened for visitors from 2008. Sowa used nets, plastic bottles, plywood and bamboo mainly to build the island. The island had a house, three beaches, a self-composting toilet and a solar oven as well.
10. The Pearl-Qatar
The Pearl-Qatar is another one of the top artificial islands and has an area of approximately four million square metres. It is still under development and once completed, it will be used as a residential estate of an estimated 45000 residents and 18831 dwellings by 2018. Upon completion, it will contain luxury villas, five-star hotels, restaurants, cafes and others.
11. Willingdon Island
Willingdon Islands are the largest man-made island in India and one of the top artificial islands of the world and are located in Kerala, India. It is home to the Port of Kochi and Kochi Naval Base as well. The island houses the Office of the Cochin Port Trust, the Customs Office, almost two dozen export-import offices, business centres, warehouses and a few hotel business centres as well.
12. Tokyo DisneySea
Tokyo DisneySea is one of the top artificial islands and it is a theme park at the Tokyo Dream Resort located in Urayasu, Japan. It started functioning from September 2001. It attracted roughly 14 million visitors in 2013 alone thus making it the fourth most visited theme park in the world.
13. Venetian Islands
The Venetian Islands are one of the top artificial islands in the world. Located in Biscayne Bay, the islands remains a picnic island and is uninhabited and was built in 1920. The islands are connected to the mainland by bridges.
Thilafushi is another one of the top artificial islands located in Maldives. It was created as a municipal landfill. It consists of a lot of luxury resorts and is known for its white beaches and its natural beauty. Currently, the industrial activities going on in the island are boat manufacturing, cement packing, methane gas bottling and various large-scale warehousing among others.
15. Port Island
Port Island is one of the top artificial islands located in Chuo-ku, Kobe, Japan. It was constructed between 1966 and 1981 at Port of Kobe. It consists of a heliport, two universities, numerous hotels, a convention centre, the UCC Coffee Museum, Japan’s 3rd IKEA store, World Memorial Hall and several parks.
16. Danube Island
The Donauisel or Danube Island located in Vienna, Austria is one of the top artificial islands. It is 21.1 km long but its width is only 70-120 m. It is a recreational beach that houses restaurants, nightclubs and bars as well. It also consists of exclusive nude beaches. It hosts the internationally well-known annual open air festival, Donauinselfest at the end of June.
17. Our Lady of the Rocks
Our Lady of the Rocks is one of the top artificial islands. It is located in Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. It was created by a barricade of rocks and by sinking old ships filled with rocks. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is the largest expanding on the small man-made island and it has a museum attached as well.
